Introduction to Painting the Figure

Instructor: Justin Kapp

Wednesdays, Feb. 21 – April 10

6-9pm

Tuition: $419

In this class, students will learn the foundational steps of painting a figure in color as taught at Studio Incamminati.

The focus will be on direct painting, in which the initial drawing is done with paint, directly on the canvas, and without the use of a careful graphite or charcoal drawing made for transfer to the canvas. This method prioritizes quick, energetic starts, which enable the artist to capture gesture, proportion, and the character of the model most effectively. From there, the class will progress to the stages of “open” and then “closed” grisaille, building from large light and shadow relationships to more subtle relative values. The beginning stages of this approach will be done in a weak-color brown or “grisaille” tone, and we will progress to a limited palette from there. Throughout the class, the focus will be on simplifying a complex subject matter and keeping big, organizing concepts at the fore to set the table for longer paintings.
