Build your artistic practice with Studio Incamminati’s Continuing Education 8-Week Courses, thoughtfully designed for serious part-time students balancing artistic study with professional and personal commitments. Offered in the evenings and on weekends, these structured courses provide long-term training in drawing and painting from life, making it possible to pursue rigorous artistic development while maintaining a busy schedule.
Whether you’re continuing your artistic journey or returning to the studio after time away, these courses offer a rewarding path for sustained growth and creative exploration.
In this class, instructor Alexander Shanks will walk students through the process and techniques of developing a dynamic portrait in charcoal on paper. Students will learn the process of creating likeness and expressive qualities within a well structured portrait drawing. Students should expect to walk away from the class with a deeper understanding of facial anatomy, value structure and aesthetic flow that contribute to a strong portrait.
During the duration of the class, students will learn to handle optical and conceptual ideas as they pertain to portraiture. With achieving a likeness being a primary goal, students will improve upon their seeing of specific proportion and shape while anchoring themselves in structure and perspective. With shorter poses initially, the class will focus on achieving a specific block in, then transition towards longer poses where light and form can be discovered through value.
During these 8 weeks, students will learn and practice the fundamentals of a figure-drawing block-in, eventually moving on to describing form and light effects throughout a sustained pose. Instruction emphasis will be on gesture, structure, and proportion, while still maintaining a holistic read on the drawing
*This Class will feature a long-pose model that will be shared between Ethan’s Monday Figure Drawing and Mina Mohtasham’s Wednesday Figure Drawing courses. These classes can be taken separately or in conjunction with each other as an extended program*
