Graphite Figure Drawing
In this class, we will explore a structured approach to graphite figure drawing, beginning with the construction of dynamic, abstract gestures using straight lines, angles, and simplified forms. Rather than focusing immediately on contour and detail, students will learn how to identify the major directional forces of the pose and organize them into a strong underlying framework.
From there, we will develop effective blocking-in techniques that establish accurate proportions, relationships, and placement before moving into refinement. Special attention will be given to understanding the figure as a collection of three-dimensional forms, using value, plane changes, and light logic to create convincing depth, volume, and spatial presence on a two-dimensional surface.
The course will also cover essential graphite handling strategies, including mark-making, edge control, layering, hatching, and the use of different pencil grades to achieve a full range of tones and textures. Students will learn practical methods for maintaining clarity, structure, and visual hierarchy throughout the drawing process.
Alongside these technical skills, we will examine key aspects of figure structure and anatomy, focusing on the major masses, landmarks, and proportional relationships that help artists understand and construct the human form with greater confidence. By combining gesture, construction, value, and structural knowledge, students will develop a stronger foundation for creating expressive, believable figure drawings and will gain the tools needed to take their observational drawing skills to the next level.
