Painting from Photographs

Instructor: Jay Harris

Saturdays, Oct 17th – Dec 12th (Skip Nov. 28th)

1pm – 4pm

Tuition: $419

Explore the process of transforming photographic references into expressive, dimensional paintings. This eight-class course combines foundational drawing, value, lighting, and color theory with practical painting techniques to help students create work that feels both accurate and visually dynamic.

Students will learn how to select and work from photographic references, use a projector to establish accurate proportions, build a strong grisaille and value foundation, and gradually develop their paintings through multiple color passes. As the course progresses, students will explore color theory, transparent and opaque paint, glazing, medium, and techniques for creating convincing three-dimensional form through light and shadow.

The course emphasizes understanding light, value, color, and mood rather than simply copying a photograph. Through demonstrations, guided studio time, and individual feedback, students will develop a painting from initial sketch through final details while learning a repeatable process they can apply to future work.
