Philadelphia Realist Legacy

Not only is Philadelphia linked to a rich history of American Arts through a variety of artists but also through schools like PAFA and now Studio Incamminati. With Philadelphia acting as a major artistic center for the United States, a broad range of important artists have been born in, worked in, or spent significant amounts of time in the city, collectively creating a vibrant art culture. Possessing wealthy and enlightened patrons, institutions of art study, and art museums, Philadelphia’s and its many artists are an example of the long history of American Art. Realism assumed many variations in style and theme amongst the city’s artists, from Thomas Eakins and his technical precision to Mary Cassat’s emotional depth, to our founder, Nelson Shanks’ intermingling of classic realist technique with impressionists’ colors.
