A Brush with Simplicity: Simplifying your approach to painting in oil

In the busy world we live in, there are times when we have to make a quick portrait. Maybe you have a family member or friend over and you want to record the moment in a way that has more importance, more personal value than a photo. Painting from life can be an experience that you share with the family member or friend you paint.
Maybe you’re a portrait painter and you have to work from a photo because your client has time restraints. But you want to get a feel for them by doing a quick painting from life that gives you psychological insight. Maybe you want to record the real color before the camera changes it. Maybe you want to paint children from life, record that moment when you bring a newborn home, or even paint one of your teenagers that you’ve managed to pin down for a moment. Maybe we just want to speed up our approach or just want to get the block in down faster. This class will help.
We will learn how to adjust our usual painting technique in order to be more efficient, fast, and accurate. We will learn a series of techniques to develop our eye and enable us to get the proportions quickly.
We will play several games to put those techniques into practice and train our eye in fun and exciting ways that will teach us to find our proportions faster and find measurements without the need for measuring tools.
We will learn techniques for quickly matching the color we see. We will learn different ways to see the model that will help us paint faster, yet more accurate.
We will learn how to handle the brush and how to manipulate the paint alla prima.
We will learn how to slow down in order to paint faster.
we will learn how to quickly represent form and light with fewer strokes.
We will learn how to actually mix properly and efficiently so that you can control the components of color (hue, value, and chroma) and get more colors using fewer colors and less palette space. We will learn effective brush, palette, and mixing techniques.
The class will consist of demos, lectures, and painting together.
Ricky Mujica
About the Artist
Ricky Mujica, born in NYC, is an award winning figurative painter, husband and father. Among his awards are, 1rst place (the Cadmium Award) TRAC2019, 1rst place Lore Degenstein Ninth Annual Figure Competition, 1rst place April Round TRAC 2015, The Florence and Ernest Thompson Memorial Award, Finalist several times in the Portrait Society of America, Oil Painters of America, NOAPS, Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists, WMOCA, Figuratively Speaking, and an Honorable Mention in Figurativas Barcelona.
His paintings have been exhibited and are in collections all over the world. He has been named a “Living Master” by The Art Renewal Center, has a Signature Status with the Portrait Society of America, and is a member of the Poets and Artists Collective. He proudly teaches painting at the Art Students League of New York and is on the faculty of the Florence Academy MA program where he teaches academic drawing and painting.

Workshops Payment and Refund Policies
Due to limited class space, tuition is non-refundable. A credit for tuition may be issued up to
30 days before the first workshop class. No credit will be issued after that time. Credits are valid from one year of issue. Registration and enrollment is first-come, first-served with full tuition due at time of registration.
Continuing Education and Emerging Artists School-year Program Payment and Refund Policies
Due to limited class space, tuition must be paid in full at time of registration. A $100 fee is applied for cancellation up to the first class. No refunds will be issued after the first class.
