Drawing and Painting the figure
This class is on-going and continuous from semester to semester and open to students of all skill levels. Students who are new to painting and/or do not have a drawing foundation are encouraged to start with drawing exercises before moving into painting. The class description covers the span of several semesters (not just one semester) and is meant to give students an overview. Ultimately, the pace of the class is dependent on, and determined by, students’ needs and experiences.
The focus of this class is in the following areas and principles related to them: essences/accuracy of gestures/proportions/forms of the figure as the figure relates to the environment, calibration of value/color relationships of the figure to the whole (composition) and the connection between drawing and painting.
Exercises include long and short poses. We will start with shorter poses in the beginning of the semester and end with one long pose over the span of several evenings later in the semester. Instruction includes lectures, demos and individual critiques at the easels.
