Drawing the portrait in graphite

Instructor: Jason Jenkins

Saturdays, Feb. 3 – March 23

11am-2pm EST (online via zoom)

Tuition: $399

Overview

This class is suitable for all experience and skill levels. We will explore a procedural method for drawing portraits in graphite. We will begin by using straight lines and angular relationships to establish the scale, location, gesture, and proportion of the portrait in abstract spaces. We will then separate the shapes between light and shadow utilizing the terminator and blocking in the shadow. From there we will look at conceptual models to assist us in understanding the planar structure of the head and break down the light mass into four distinct calibrated values. Next we will examine the structures and sub forms of the features and of the cranial mass they are housed within. This will enable us to move into developing smaller shapes of value and more refined form across each area of the portrait one by one. Lastly we will examine the nature of hair and effective methods for rendering it in graphite. And finally we will return to the portrait as a whole to fine tune the relationship of each feature relative to the rest and to the whole and to apply any finishing touches. When completed students will have a systematic process for building and refining a portrait that they can employ strategically in their own practice.

Platforms
We will be employing HD Zoom, and Google Classroom throughout the course of this workshop. In addition, I will be using Adobe Photoshop to deliver critiques in the clearest way possible. Lectures, Demos, and Critiques will be recorded and posted to Google classroom for student review. Assignments will be given at the end of each class and should be submitted by email at: jasonpatrickjenkins@gmail.com for inclusion in the following weeks critique.
