Weekend Introduction to Silverpoint
In this workshop, students will learn the history of working in silverpoint and its usage in the Italian and Northern Renaissance. Through examination of Cennino Cennini’s book Il Libro dell’Arte (The Book of Art), we will learn the fundamentals and specifics of line drawing as they pertain to silverpoint. Students will also learn about traditional ground preparation on paper while comparing it to contemporary silverpoint grounds and ready-made surfaces. Students will be drawing from a still-life and a live model using grounds prepared in the workshop.
Learning Goals:
1. Acquiring a heightened proficiency in drawing contour and rendering form purely with line.
2. Understanding the similarities and differences between various surfaces which can accept silverpoint
3. Learning how to achieve subtleties on the model and record these with various forms of mark-making.
4. Reading and dissecting Renaissance drawings with a more inquisitive eye.
