Interpreting the figure
This workshop will comprise three days of instructed figure painting. The instruction will focus on observation and technique, while leaving room to explore expressive, abstract, and design elements. Our figure model will be mostly nude, but partially draped and jewelry-adorned in hopes of evoking associations with other times and places.
The first day (Friday) will consist of a morning presentation and demonstration, and an afternoon block during which we will paint a sustained pose. The second and third day (Saturday and Sunday) will be devoted to a new single sustained pose, interspersed with painting demonstrations.
My instruction will be mostly technical in nature, touching on simplified figure construction and anatomy on an as-need basis. In addition to a strong perceptual lean, I also want to share my experiences using memory and imagination to imbue studio figure work with design and narrative intrigue.
