The Portrait in Charcoal: Simple to Complex.
The purpose of this class is to work from large to small. We will use charcoal for its ease in moving shapes around, however these methods can be applied to any media.
The first four weeks will be spent on short portrait poses, working up to longer poses. Using straight lines and angles, we will aim for the gesture of the head, add placeholders for features, then discuss hierarchy of values.
–The second 4 weeks will be spent investigating specific features. Each week we will do a deep dive into the ear, eye, nose and mouth to fully investigate the structure.
–The final week will be spent on one long pose, compiling everything in one drawing.
The class will meet on zoom. Each week students will receive a link to a video model from which to work. Class efforts can be submitted for blind critique if desired.
If you want to improve your portrait skills, this class is for you!
About the Artist
honesty, noun: truthfulness, sincerity or frankness
My aim as an artist is to strive for honesty~ what is sincere, felt, poetic.
I am inspired by interactions with people, and objects of personal meaning. It is an exchange of energy.
For portraits, I look for quiet moments in thought~ the brief break before we interact with the world, because all people want to be seen and heard.
My goal is to find that space.
Through still life, I infuse meaning with seemingly random objects. Nothing is an accident.
I received my B.F.A. in Painting from Moore College of Art and Design. To further my studies, I completed the Advanced Fine Art Program at Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia.
I currently live in Naples, Florida, where I teach and work in my studio.
